In April, Monkey Puzzle, Orient Close held a charity week to support Jocelyn Leaver. Jossie attended Monkey Puzzle on Ridgmont Road full time from June 2014 until last summer when she went to school. Jossie was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma in November 2017 and the best treatment options for Jossie may not be available on the NHS. This is why her family are fundraising so they will then have the funds secured to access the relevant treatment in the United Kingdom or overseas. With this in mind, the Monkey Puzzle community wanted to help.
As part of our fundraising campaign, the whole nursery participated in various fancy dress throughout the week. As Disney’s Frozen is Jossie’s favourite film, we kicked off the week with a frozen themed day. The children dressed up as characters from Frozen and were delighted when Olaf and Elsa came to visit Monkey Puzzle. It was such an exciting opportunity for the children to meet the characters and ask them questions.
We raised money throughout the week by holding a raffle and a bake sale with a range of sweet treats and prizes that were kindly donated by the parents. The whole nursery completed a sponsored walk around the block which provided another opportunity to collect money for Jossie.
The sponsored walk, along with the whole fundraising week, has provided great learning opportunities for the children at Monkey Puzzle who have discovered that there are things we can do to help others in need.
The remainder of April was also very busy as St. George’s day was celebrated with a range of English themed activities and learning experiences. The flag of England was hung throughout the nursery and the children used a variety of mark-making materials to create their own versions of the St. George’s cross. On the menu was a traditionally English dish of Fish with homemade chips and mushy peas. As always, we will continue to get involved in a variety of celebrations throughout the year.
