Happy New Year! We’ve been busy getting back in the swing of things, & January has brought plenty of opportunities for fun activities & celebrations.
Blue Monkeys have been exploring books & literacy throughout the month, they have linked this to textures as we explored the textured books, as well as looking at various printed materials within the room. We have handled big & small books as we listened to stories, helped with turning pages & also tried to fill in gaps in our favourite tales. With flashcards being a favourite of our youngest children, we were very excited to explore the new ones this month! We have loved looking at all the pictures & practiced sounding out the words, as well as the different sounds that animals & vehicles make. Our babies have also been recognising shapes through gluing & sticking, as well as painting & printing with shape cutters & paint. Some of the babies were able to confidently recognise simple shapes such as a ‘circle’.
Throughout January, Pink Monkeys have been having fun taking part in some new activities! The children explored & developed their coordination, gross motor skills & colour recognition as they played balloon basketball, whilst also naming the colours. The children have been mixing & matching as they consolidate their shape recognition through a coordination game where they match a shape on a ball to the same shape on a tube & post the ball through, creating a fun shape sorting/transporting activity.
This Month in Red Monkeys, our eldest children have been exploring how musical instruments sound, drawn pictures of their favourite instruments which have been extended through creating their own instruments, such as guitars made from cardboard boxes & elastic bands & rainmakers made from cardboard tubes, foil & rice. Our children have also been looking at different lengths using rulers, tape & then finding objects that are different sizes. Red Monkeys have also been interested in space & planets, so we have been looking at the Roaring Rockets Book, & also naming & jumping on specific planets on our space mat. We made our own spaceship using a paper plate & painted it in all different colours.
January was rounded off with our Australia Day celebrations, where both Staff & children came in wearing red, white & blue, the colours of the Australian flag. We enjoyed a Barbeque feast for lunch & lots of activities including creating our own flags, Aboriginal painting with cotton buds & making boomerangs & didgeridoos.
We also had a fabulous visit from ‘Gargs Animal Parties’, where all children of all ages were able to explore animals & creatures from around the world & discover about where they live, how they move & what they eat!
