October 2020
During October, we have seen some colder and wetter weather arrive and this has provided new learning opportunities both inside & outside!
This month Blue Monkeys have been on a hunt around their room for different animals, encouraging them to identify each one and developing their language through repetition of words.
In Pink Monkeys, the children have enjoyed splashing in puddles wearing wellies and waterproof coats. This has led to discussions about different types of weather and introduced the topic of exploring and recognising opposites such as hot & cold or wet & dry.
Red Monkeys got creative this month by making their own telescopes to look around and search for different things! The children keenly scanned the skies looking for planes, helicopters and birds to point out to their peers.
As we entered the second half of the month the decorations went up as we got involved in all sorts of Halloween activities! From pumpkin exploration to making slime to mark making different spooky characters, the children have delved into this event and gotten their creative juices flowing! We enjoyed a week-long eerie Halloween menu including chilling-con-carne, skeleton rolls & more! The Halloween week culminated in a ghoulish party and saw various scary fancy dress from both staff & children within the nursery as we enjoyed party games, a party tea & lots of fun!
This month also saw us take part in a new challenge, British Nutrition Foundation’s Healthy Eating Week! This saw a set of daily themes to incorporate into our practice to increase awareness of looking after our body and minds, the themes were; Eat More Wholegrains, Vary your Veg, Drink Plenty, Move More and Be Mind Kind. Throughout the week children took part in activities to promote their awareness of what they eat, drinking more water to stay hydrating, being active and also looking after our minds. This included Zumba dancing sessions, Yoga classes, relaxation time, printing with fruits and vegetables and a challenge to add a sticker to a large cup every time they drank their water and fill up the picture by the end of the day! The children delved into these activities with enthusiasm & the event was a huge success, followed up by some at home challenges of being active together and eating together, well to everyone who got involved!
